Pam Spaulding

Biography

Pam Spaulding’s career as a photojournalist spans four decades for the Louisville Courier-Journal and Louisville Times, during which she made many contributions to the visual storytelling about the people of Kentucky. Her work at the newspapers includes her role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of court-ordered busing in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in 1976. She also earned a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 1984-85, one of the few photographers selected for this fellowship.

Her long-term dedication to documenting the McGarvey family, which began over 47 years ago, resulted in the publication of An American Family, Three Decades with the McGarveys by National Geographic. She continues photographing this family.

Beyond her work with the McGarveys and the newspapers, Spaulding has explored Kentucky’s culture and natural beauty through several other books, including those on the state’s parks, bourbon, and traditional foods.  In addition, she has been published in numerous magazines and books.

In her retirement, Pam Spaulding has turned her attention to the birds of Kentucky, continuing to capture the beauty of this state in new ways.
